A Backbone CHAPT1 KarkatxMale!Reader

It has been a year, maybe a year and half, since you met your new 'family'. Who is that family? Why, just the whole gang, of course! There's John, Dave, Rose, Jade, Gamzee, Terezi, Eridan, Karkat...you were honestly going to finish but your mind trailed off when you thought of Karkat. Sometimes he scares you with his loud voice and language, but sometimes there seems to be..a hint of something. You don't know what. But it seemed warm.

As you were saying, you don't know exactly why they all adopted you into their group. Maybe it was out of pity. You did look pretty pathetic that day. Well, who could blame you?

Your only friend suddenly stops talking to you on the same day you were called at school and were told your mother died of lung cancer. Which the doctors said that it was 'perfectly controlled' and 'she has recovered fully'. So you went to your haven, the high school library, and quietly sobbed in the corner. You would have stayed there for a while if it wasn't for two certain guys.

"C'mon, Dave, this guy is crying. We can at least help him." John stated bending over you in a way that reminded you of a mother and her child, which made you cry a little more.

"How the fuck do you even 'comfort' someone?" Dave said.

Long story short, Dirk and the other adults worked hard to make it to where you are able to live there, since your father is dead also. You are extremely grateful, if it wasn't for them you could be in a completely different state for all you know. The gang and adults were all nice to you, which was a very good thing because they don't seem like good people to have as enemies. (Especially since you know what weapons the Striders are familiar with.) Some have grown quite protective of you, a few despise you, but you figured it could be worse.

Back to the present now. Right now you are waiting for your turn while Dave, Dirk, Sollux, and Karkat playing Super Mario Bros for Wii. Well, Karkat was trying to keep up.

"WILL YOU FUCKASSES SLOW THE FUCK DOWN?!" Karkat said is his inside voice. You flinched at his volume for even though you were living with them for two months you still had not grown used to his voice and language yet.

"Nope." The other three say at once. Then Karkat lost his last life due to Sollux throwing him off the edge. Karkat cussed some more and threw his Wii remote at the couch, five inches to your right away from your face.

You flinch and make a noise that sounds like "Eeep!" and cover your face with the English homework from your species friendly school. The other three instantly paused the game and looked at you covering your face and the angry Karkat.

"Dude, chill the Hell out." Dave said with a voice that sounded annoyed. "if you actually hit (Name)Dirk and I would have to punish you. Severely."

"WELL I DIDN'T HIT HIM!! DID I?!" Karkat used his 'inside' voice again. You put your homework back on your lap and shift awkwardly. You fidgeted with your (h/l) (h/c) feeling awkward and embarrassed with all of their attention on you.

"I-I'm fine. He didn't hit me, even if he did, it would have been a accident." You say hoping that will calm them down a little. However, it caused Karkat to get about 6 inches from your face, making you lean into the couch a little.

"YOU LITTLE SHIT. YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANGRY YET AND YOU'VE BEEN HERE FOR TWO MONTHS WITH THESE ASSHOLES!" Karkat took a quick pause. "GET ANGRY! GROW A BACKBONE!" You flinched at his harsh word and hung your head a little feeling bad.

"S-Sorry-"

"DON'T APOLOGIZE!!"

"Hey. KK, just relax and go to your room and avoid the Thstriderths until they're chill with you." Sollux spoke showing his lisp. Karkat cussed and ranted a little more then started walking to his bedroom. When he was almost at the stairs you looked away when you noticed him looking at you. He must really hate you..but it's hard to tell with his personality. But you think he honestly is a nice person but maybe he's afraid to show it. You have been in the same position before.

"Hey, (Name) don't let Karkles get to you." Dave said looking you in the eye, or at least you think he is. "Maybe later we can cook something from Betty Crocker and give it to Joh-"

"Don't even think about it Dave." John said in his best threatening voice possibly, which wasn't that great. He lept over the couch and plopped right beside you and looked at your English homework. "Need any help?" You gave a small smile and shook your head to mean no.

"Seriously, man, get over Betty already." Dave said turning his head toward the screen a little. "DIRK YOU STARTED WITHOUT ME?!!" Sollux then turned his focus to the screen to and saw that due to Dirk he and Dave lost a total of 4 lives. (Which wasn't that big of a deal compared to the 94 lives they currently have.) They quickly started playing to avoid losing anymore. You giggled a little when you saw Dirk's smirk. You have to admit, a quiet Dirk is a dangerous Dirk. They should have known better.

"Yo, (Name), you wanna play?" Dirk asked you. Even without seeing Dave and Sollux's face you knew they were giving him dirty looks for his earlier mentioned 'trick'.

You shook your head, "Oh, no. I need to finish my homework." You see some movement out of the corner of your eye and you see John pointing at an answer.

"That's the answer." John commented. Yes, and I would have found that on my own if you didn't point it out, you thought. You saw Dirk turn to look at you, while beating Dave and Sollux, and opened his mouth to speak.

"You know you can chill out and let your A go to a B+ or A- if you want to.."

You smiled at Dirk trying to get you to relax a little. "No, I'm fine. I want to keep my A." Dirk nodded and turned back to his game using his green Yoshi to eat Dave and spit him out at a turtle throwing hammers.

"Bro, what the fuck." Dave said with a eyebrow, what you could see of it, lowered.

You smiled and continued with your homework with John sitting by you helping you. But what you didn't know, was that a certain Cancer troll was watching you, while sitting on the stairs.

"Karkat, it may be triggering to spy on people-"

"Shut up." Karkat said interrupting his relative Kankri. He really didn't feel like taking his shit today. Especially since he was feeling weird...almost guilty.
